I lived in Indonesia while these happened (left to right):
- The first Bali bonbing in Jl. Legian, a popular nightclubbing district. They still sell T-shirts there with “Fuck Terrorist” printed on them.
- The Jakarta Stock Exchange bombing. My dad’s office building was a short walk away and so he could feel the blast.
- The Australian Embassy Bombing. About 10 Indonesians died, and the Australian news was famous for reporting “It’s okay! No Australians died!” Which was rather callous.
- This bombing of the JW Marriott hit close to home. Not literally, but my parents did used to love their Sunday buffet. It had the misfortune of being bombed twice, but to my knowledge is still in operation.
I also was in Jakarta when Dayaks came out of the rainforest in Kalimantan and started chopping off Madurese heads. I was going to put a picture up, but honestly searching for it just repulsed me. Freshly severed heads are not pleasant.
I was in Jakarta when Ambon got whipped up into religious fighting between Christian and Muslim gangs, who fought each other with machetes and home made guns. Oddly, I couldn’t find a decent picture from the period I remember, because violence flares up again from time to time, last in 2011, so the most recent pictures are from then.
I was in Jakarta while GAM was still fighting a guerrilla war in Aceh for independence. It was still going on when I left, and they only signed a peace treaty when the Tsunami hit.
I was in Jakarta when Indonesia still occupied East Timor, and were fighting against guerrilla militias there. And I was in Jakarta when the Australian-led UN peacekeepers took control of it.
So hey, Americans, you feel threatened when you catch a guy who tried to hide a bomb in his underwear? It’s honestly as silly as it sounds, and he got caught. You haven’t had a civilian casualty from terrorism for years.
So don’t even talk to me about terrorism being a huge threat to you.
