I’m waiting for a Black Panther movie.
Generally speaking regarding these films, I’m less concerned with gender/racial exposure as I am with character, but naturally in this case it’s both. T’Challa is a pretty cool character, beyond his skills, and I love how Wakanda is primitive in appearance but way powerful beyond that.
But I’d also like to see if it’s possible for Hollywood to greenlight a project with a leading black man who isn’t Will Smith. Because if it is Will Smith that would ruin the character, no offense to Mr. Smith.
Marvel’s done pretty well with casting lately, too. I imagine they’d be able to pick someone great. First person to come to mind is currently Lawrence Fishburne, though there are likely tons of other great black actors who could pull it off.
Black Widow has been made popular by the Avengers movie, and it’s a great thing. She deserves something of her own. I would feel really weird if they made a Luke Cage/Iron Fist movie though. Both characters are okay but are relics of some odd ideas from when they were created. I don’t mind Danny Rand as he is, but it would just feel odd to me as yet another example of “blonde white guy learns kung fu.” I would, however, be fascinated if they chose an Asian actor as “the best for the role.”
I don’t mind that Ant-Man is coming out before either a Black Panther or Black Widow movie have been confirmed. Ant-Man is actually a founding Avengers member. It makes some chronological sense that he be a part of it. He’s also a lovely character. Both Panther and Widow are great, but they come in somewhat later, and also have their own priorities away from any Avengers.
